Desert dust clogs Chandler dryer vents

Much of Chandler used to be farm fields, and most houses built on them are stucco over a wood frame, with concrete tile roofs. Closer to downtown there are older, smaller homes, and in Ocotillo some houses back onto man-made lakes. What they share is the dust. Fine desert dirt gets into everything here. Inside a dryer vent it mixes with lint and packs into a mat that air can barely push through.

A blocked vent shows up first as a dryer that takes longer and longer to dry a load of towels. When air cannot get out, heat builds up inside the machine and the vent. Lint burns easily, so a packed vent next to a hot dryer is a real fire risk. On many houses here the vent runs through the attic and out the roof instead of out a side wall. That is a long pipe with bends in it, and it sits in an attic that gets very hot every summer.

So a dryer vent job starts with an inspection. We look at how the vent is routed and how much air reaches the outside cap before we clean anything. Then the whole run gets cleaned, from the back of the dryer to the cap, and we check the airflow again at the end. The same dust settles on floors and hard surfaces inside the house. Grease builds up in Chandler restaurant hoods

Downtown Chandler has a lot of restaurants and bars, and more sit in the shopping centers along the city's main roads. Most of those kitchens have an exhaust hood over the cooking line. The hood pulls smoke and grease up through the filters and into a duct that ends at a fan on the roof. The filters catch some of the grease. The rest coats the inside of the duct and the fan, and it keeps building until somebody cleans it out.

Grease in a duct is fuel. A flare-up on the grill can pull flame into the hood. If the duct is coated, the fire can climb up inside it where the kitchen staff cannot reach it.
