Many Tempe dryers vent through the roof

North of the Superstition Freeway, many Tempe neighborhoods are older ranch houses on concrete slabs, built of block or of frame and stucco. In plenty of them the laundry sits inside the house, away from any outside wall. So the dryer vent runs up through the attic and comes out on the roof. That long run straight up is where lint settles, and it is the part of the vent most people never see.

The screen in your dryer catches most of the lint, but not all of it. What gets past sticks to the inside of the duct. On a run that goes straight up, loose lint also drops back toward the dryer when it shuts off. Birds sometimes nest in the cap on the roof, which blocks the end of the pipe. Once the vent clogs, a load needs a second cycle to dry and the laundry room gets hot. Lint catches fire easily, so a clogged vent is a fire risk inside the house.

Close to the university, plenty of houses are rentals shared by students, and the dryer runs more than it would for a single family. The owner often lives somewhere else, so a clogged vent can go a long time before anyone notices. Whoever lives in the house, the job is the same. Grease builds fast in busy Tempe kitchens

Downtown Tempe has a lot of restaurants within a few blocks of Mill Avenue, and Arizona State University sits right next door. Many of them cook from lunch until late at night, so the fryers and flat tops run for hours at a stretch. The whole time, grease goes up into the hood along with the smoke. Grease inside a duct is fuel. A flare-up on the grill can get pulled into the hood. If the duct is lined with old grease, the fire has a path up through the building. A fan caked in grease also moves less air, so smoke and heat stay in the kitchen. Without a hinge, a rooftop fan has to be lifted off its base before anyone can reach the duct under it. We install exhaust fan hinge kits, so the fan tips back and the duct can be cleaned all the way down.

Summer dust storms cover Tempe in dirt

The summer monsoon brings dust storms across the Valley, and Tempe gets its share of them. A single storm can leave a layer of fine dirt on every surface outside the house. If a little rain follows, that dirt turns into brown streaks down the block walls and a film of mud on the driveway. Plenty of Tempe yards also have a pool deck or a covered patio that collects the same dirt. We pressure wash driveways and pool decks to get that dirt off the concrete.
