Desert dust fills Peoria dryer vents

Peoria runs a long way north. The older part of town sits near Grand Avenue and Old Town, where most of the houses are single story. Head north past the freeway and nearly everything is newer: stucco over a wood frame with a concrete tile roof, built in planned neighborhoods like Vistancia. Plenty of those newer homes have two floors, and some put the laundry room upstairs.

Where the laundry sits decides how long the dryer vent is. An upstairs laundry often vents out through the roof, or the duct runs a long way inside the walls before it reaches the outside. Every bend and every extra foot gives lint a place to settle. In an older single story house the run is usually shorter, but the hose behind the dryer is often old and crushed flat against the wall.

Then there is the weather. Summer dust storms blow fine dirt into the outside flap, and in the neighborhoods that back onto open desert the dust hardly lets up. Dust and lint together pack into a mat that air cannot push through. The dryer runs hotter and the clothes stay damp, and a hot, blocked vent is a fire risk. Grease builds up in Peoria restaurant hoods

Peoria's restaurants are spread out. There is a cluster around the Peoria Sports Complex, where spring training brings big crowds. Summer in Peoria brings monsoon storms. A wall of dust often rolls in first, and then a short, hard rain turns that dust into mud on driveways and patios. When it dries it leaves a brown film that a garden hose will not lift. Houses near the dry washes and the open desert on the north side of town tend to get the worst of it.

Hard water is the other stain you see all over town. Valley water carries a lot of minerals. Sprinklers that hit a block wall or the bottom of a stucco wall leave a white crust as they dry. Over a few years it builds into rings that look like chalk. Pressure washing takes the dirt off, and it also shows you how much of that crust is left underneath.

Restaurants in Peoria have their own outdoor mess. Grease that escapes the roof fan runs down the walls and stains the ground below. The pad behind the kitchen, where the dumpsters and grease bins sit, collects spills that bake in the afternoon heat.
