Goodyear buildings often have long dryer vents

Most of Goodyear was built in the last few decades, in planned neighborhoods such as Palm Valley and Estrella. The buildings are mostly stucco with tile roofs. In a lot of floor plans the laundry room sits well inside the building. That means the dryer vent cannot go straight out a wall. It runs up through the attic and out a cap on the roof. Sometimes it has a few turns on the way.

Every bend in a long vent catches lint. Then summer arrives, and the attic around that pipe gets far hotter than the air outside. Lint packed into a hot pipe is a real fire risk, and nobody sees it building up. The signs show up in the laundry room: towels that need a second cycle, or a room that feels hot while the dryer runs. Birds also like to nest in roof caps, and a nest can close a vent off.

We clean the whole vent, from the back of the dryer to the cap outside, and we can inspect it on the same visit. A vent can be free of lint and still have a problem. The flexible hose behind the dryer often gets crushed when the machine is pushed back against the wall. Joints up in a hot attic can also work loose over the years. Goodyear restaurant kitchens build up grease

Goodyear has added a lot of restaurants as it has grown, along McDowell Road and Estrella Parkway. Every one of those kitchens sends grease up into the hood whenever the fryer or the grill is running. Some of it catches on the filters. The rest rides up the duct and coats the inside of it, all the way to the exhaust fan on the roof. Nobody in the kitchen can see that part of the system, which is why it gets missed.

Grease in a duct is fuel. A flare-up on the grill that would normally die out can catch the grease in the hood. From there, fire can travel up the duct, where it is very hard to reach. The Arizona sun adds a second problem. Grease that leaks out of the rooftop fan spreads across the roof, and the summer heat bakes it into the roofing underneath. When spring training fills Goodyear Ballpark, the kitchens around it run hard for weeks, and a busy kitchen loads its duct faster.

Summer dust storms coat Goodyear buildings

Open desert and farm fields are still close to Goodyear. During the summer monsoon, dust storms roll in and leave a layer of fine dirt on everything. It settles on driveways and pool decks. A little rain on top turns it into muddy streaks down the stucco. One storm is easy to ignore. By the end of the season, the whole building looks dull from the street.
