Desert dust fills dryer vents in Surprise

A lot of Surprise was built as planned neighborhoods of stucco buildings with tile roofs. That goes for Sun City Grand and for the newer subdivisions at the edge of town. In many of them the laundry room sits in the middle of the building, away from any outside wall. So the dryer duct climbs through the attic and comes out on the roof. A long duct with turns in it catches lint much faster than a short, straight one.

Surprise gets plenty of dust, and the summer dust storms push fine grit under roof caps and into the duct. Mixed with lint, it packs into a thick layer that holds heat. The first sign is usually a dryer that needs two cycles to dry a load of towels. After that the laundry room feels hot, and the top of the dryer gets warm to the touch. Lint catches fire easily, which is why a packed dryer line is a fire risk.

The job starts with an inspection of the vent, from the back of the dryer to where the duct leaves the building. We look for crushed sections and for lint packed along the run. Bell Road restaurants need clean exhaust hoods

Bell Road carries a long run of restaurants through Surprise, and more sit near the ballpark. Spring training fills Surprise Stadium, and winter visitors keep dining rooms busy for months. All that cooking puts grease into the air above the grills and fryers. The hood catches it, but the grease does not go away. It coats the filters and then works up the duct to the fan on the roof.

When the duct stays dirty, the grease layer gets thicker with every shift. A flare-up on the grill can pull flame into the hood. A coated duct then gives that flame fuel all the way to the roof. Desert heat adds to the problem. On a Surprise summer afternoon the fan sits in full sun, and the grease inside stays soft enough to drip onto the roof. A greasy fan also moves less air, so the kitchen runs hotter and smokier.

Grease left on concrete bakes in the Arizona sun and soaks deeper into the slab. The dark stain spreads a little every week. And every shoe that crosses the back pad carries some of that grease onto the kitchen floor.
